My Evaluation

This is my evaluation and I will be looking at what went well, what didn't go well and what I would change if I was to do this project again. I will also include my final prints of the seven deadly sins.



The parts a found that went well and I really enjoyed was coming up with the ideas for the seven different sins. I have never really used long exposures so this was a new thing for me and i really did learn a lot about, what I can achieve if a just push myself just that little bit more to get my ideas in to photographs.



The other thing I really enjoyed was thinking of different location and what i wanted in them and the back ground. in my past projects i have only really shot in the studio where i can have a lot more control of lighting and more space to play around in. this time all of my pictures were shot on location and with this it made me think on my feet more and adapt to the environment i was in. some of the location were in quite small space's so the lights from uni were too bad and bright for what I wanted so thinking of a torch was a really good idea and was very easy to move from one location to another.



The things that I found hard on this project was finding different people for the seven different sins. in a few pictures I had to use people that were in my class as my friends that I asked were not that reliable and would always let me down last minute. I did find this really frustrating and that then left me to use people more than once in some of the pictures.



I also found that from what my picture look like on my laptop don't always print out the same colour. the Pride picture was meant to be more purple but when it was printed it came out more
pinkie red then purple. For future project i will check the colour again before printing.



The one thing i would change would be my idea. I would still do the seven deadly sins but i think it would be more of a challenge if i did what the consequences would be in hell for each sin. I think that would be more interesting than just the seven deadly sin. This is because anyone can do it and some many people have, but they not ever show what the punishment would be in hell.
I think this will be an idea which i would like to develop further and hopefully be able to do it.



I did bring them up to date in the sense of some of the situations for example the lust picture. The lust picture has to men in it which when looking at other images they are just of women and men and not of the same sex but at the same time the viewer can make their own mind up on what is happening and what it means. i wanted this to carry on through out my work and i feel i have done that and that's why I wanted the text to be small.



I did really enjoy the over all project and my idea has changed a lot from what I first said. I was going to do it a bit more horror based but, looking at the cost I am glad I didn't do the horror theme. I feel I worked well and was very organised and didn't leave anything to the last minuet. I am very pleased with the out come of my work and i hope others will enjoy it as I have making it.

Reshoot of greed and examples of text.

I have now shot all of my sins and this is my re shoot of greed which I did a week ago. I really like this image and on its own it looks a bit dark but with with the other images it really works well. i tried a range of places on the image to put the text and found that the only way it could work was to shrink the text and hide it in the image. I really like this effect so I deiced to do it to all of the other sins, so I can put the text in the image with out being conscious of the eye being drawn to the text but instead the very will see it a second time round when looking closer. I have put in gluttony and pride as well so you can see the examples of what I mean.

Greed shoot.

This is the latest images I have done of the seven deadly sins project. This is the sin greed in this shoot I have kept it the same with all my shoot. I have used the same camera, tripod and torch to get the same effects on every picture. I have not put these images in Photoshop yet but my final images have.I do like these pictures but they are not in focus I have arranged another shoot with my model for a later date.

Images and text so far.

These pictures are my first attempts at putting text on to images and I'm not too keen on the idea of putting it on my images but how i want them to be printed means i have to for i don't want a broader.


I did try to recreate the images i found of the film Repo! but i found that if i had shot just the people in the studio on just a white backdrop then i think it would be alot easier for me to Photoshop them than trying to do them from the images i have made.

I do like some of the images and the text but my only worry is if i put the text in the wrong place and i dont want the text to be the first thing the viewer see i want them to let their eye go around the picuter and not just focus on just the text thats why i have tried to make the text small and hide it around the picture so they almost have to find what the title of the image is called.

I am happy with my work so far and i am happy with the gluttony, sloth and lust images the envy i will improve on the wrath i am still tring to find a place on were i can put the text and i only have to shoot Pride and Greed which i will do in the next week.

Text and Images

I have been tring to think of a way in which i can get text in to the picture with out the eye being drawn to the text first and not the image. i have look at some picture and posters and then i came across a film i have called Repo! The genetic opera. In the case it has some postcards of the cast and who they played in the film. I then started to think if i could turn my sins pictures in to they same effect as the postcards. This is one of the pictures from the postcards.

More shoots.

This picture is of wrath and i think i will shoot again. it took a very long time with the lighting and the long shutter speed. The place i went to is not too far from where i live so it was easy to get to. I found it hard tring to tell the models what i wanted them to do with out them fighting for real. i like were i have set it but i will need to re shoot it and then see which one are better. Also the ones i have taken so far seem a bit too staged.

Second shoot.

This is my second shoot and i have done gluttony and lust. i really like the lust one but one of the models looks really uneasy and to be fair i can see why! this first picture was is lust, with this idea i didnt want to really use a grils as i found that alot of magazines always use a girl teasing guys or the other way round. so i wanted something different and sort of up to date so thats why i desieded to have two guys in the picture acting like a gay couple but one of them is covering it up to friends with the picture he has one his wall. The othe picture is of gluttony with this picture i want to re shoot and get it more in focus because its just a little bit out. For all of the pictures the equipment i have used is my own Nikkon D80 digital SLR, one tripod, tourch and come coloured jells. I have not put any of the picture through photoshop yet and i dont really want to. The next step if to get feedback from people and not just friends feedback so i can take it on bored to improve my pictures.

Test shoots

So I have done some test shoots for Sloth and Envy and i am now wondering if i need to add text just saying what the sin is and the meaning. I have decided to do seven single photographs then just one picture with seven in. This is just because I want a bit more of a challenge and it helps me to develop my ideas, of not just doing one image but a set of images. By doing this it will help with planning out my picture as a set and not just as one strong image and the others just okay.

Group Feedback

Okay i have been talking to other people about my idea on the seven deadly sins they came up with some really good ideas. They have shown me that i might not have to use people but i could do people and places so like for gluttony i could do a greecy cafe and have a person eating a full English breakfast!

On the other hand it could take me longer to find locations for the shoot and set up lighting in a public place and I'm not sure the owners would be too happy with my lights in the way. i do have locations ready and models as well and i did want to use people more than saying look at the place. so i think i will stick with the main focus on the people then the place.

They did give me some ideas for lighting and i think now i wont be able to do as much horror as i want because of the amount of time i have left. I think i will make it look more creepy then horror by the lighting i use, which i want to be fairly dark. I also want to get the different colours of the sins in the picture which again i can do with lighting.

Proposal

This is my proposal for this project. I'm still a little unsure on if i want to do seven picture with one sin on each picture or seven sins on one picture. i am more drawn to the seven sins on one picture for i think it will be a challenge to see if i can get the effects right on the cuts of burns. On the other hand it would make me think a lot more about seven different picture then just one.

Aim.

To create a picture/pictures of the seven deadly sins in today’s society with a twist of horror mixed in to it. By doing this shoot I feel this will expand my knowledge in different effects with light in the studio and on location it will also help me improve on my research skills and developing ideas further to create what I want, and not what I can do because of my limited skills.

Influences and inspiration.

I first had this idea when I was at college and now I want to develop it more. I started thinking about this project again when watching thirteen ghost and had an idea when seeing one of the ghost and they effects they had used which I could use in my project. For ideas for the sins on there own I watch a film call seven which shows 7 different murders in the style of the different sins. I liked this because I like the horror and shock that people can bring to a picture or film and I think I would like to do that in my picture/picture.

Final Project.

OK i have an idea but I'm not sure if its one of them well everyone has done it sort of ideas.
i first done this shoot in college and i felt it went well the theme was the seven deadly sins and i really enjoyed it. Looking back at my picture i think it looks good for when i did it but i feel like i need to up date it a bit. From my original idea it i wrote on my model all of the sins on his body in different areas which were relevant to the sins. This time i want it to look like they have been burnt on to the skin or like they have been cut in to him. i am not sure if to do the same theme but show the sins in a modern way almost like bring them up to date a bit. So as you can see I'm not sure on if i should do one picture with all seven sin in it or one picture per sin!

Editing

Today we have done most of the editing for the filming. There is only a few more shot to get like shots around uni and the other questions for vox pop shots. We have also decided to to do a voice over the two reconstructions and still have a bit of the back ground noise. The way we have shot the video it does come across more comical and not too serious, which i think is a good think for it keeps it light hearted but is also makes it hard when shooting not to do make it look tacky or that we are going over the top to try and make it funny with what we put in it.

The only other thing we need to get is the paper work and someone to introduce the video and lead it out at the end.

Second shoot.

Me and jess have done the second shoot and we are recreating and memory which a friend had when they were in halls last year. It was a saturday night and they decieded to wrap up Adam in tape and make him hop down to spar and try and buy a chocolate bar.

The shoot list.

1st shot- Show people wrapping Adam up in tape from the start.
2nd shot- Show the final stages of Adam being wrapped up.
3rd shot- Being pushed down the street.
4th shot- being pushed back to the house.

we didnt take him to spar because we have a main road a some traffic lights and a lot of steps to get to spar so we decieded not to take him all the way and it is snowing alot and i dont think think that would be fair.

The Filming.

We started doing the filming at our friend Rikki's flat. We chose his place because we didn't know anyone who still lived in halls and his flat looks like halls so the new students will have an idea of what it could look like. His kitchen was the place we are using to recreate a stories we got from talking to friends and what they got up to in halls. In his kitchen we are recreating what happened to Alice and how her stereo speaker broke, the message we are trying to show is that you cant always trust the people you live with. We have a few ideas on how we want it to look and a bit of a story board.

2nd shot- Shot of two people talking around a table with the stereo in shot.
3rd shot - cut to one of the people who was in the last shot making a cup of tea and walk out of shot.
4th shot - His reaction of shock.
5th shot - cut to the table with stereo and speaker wire hanging out.
6th shot - Him trying to fix it.
7th shot - The stereo near the bin.

If this goes to plan we want to start editing it and then see if we need to re shoot any thing.

Ideas and Research.

We all met up to day to talk about ideas of what we want in the video and where we have been looking for ideas. we all decided that we should have a vox pop in the video but didn't want it to be all information and advice but we needed something else with it so we said that we would look at TV programs and adverts to see if we could use anything. Also we came up with 5 questions and we all chose one of them and we are going to ask the question to 5 people and film what they say and see what we have got next week.

The 5 questions.

• What was your best memory from the first year?
• What the one thing you thought you would never do?
• What is the hardest thing you have done at uni?

We all looked in different places for research the one of the best places we found was YouTube.com. There we found an old channel 4 advert what is edited in an vox pop style which we all liked and said we should use it in our video and put it at the end of the video which will give the viewer the advice from current students.

The idea

OK i have never done a blog before so lets see how this goes. My idea is to make a video for new students who are looking to come to De Montfort uni and are not sure about moving out in to hall. In my first year i never moved out in to halls i just stayed at home because i live local any way so for me i could really give much information until now where in my second year i did move out so i guess i can say what it is like to live with people you like. (well all but one!)

What we want to look at.

We want to look at if the students really felt like had all of the information they wanted from the uni about moving out. we are going to do a vox pop on student life and ask how students coped in their first year with uni work and moving away from home.

The feed back.

When filming around the uni we got a mixed views on people moving away from home from people loving it and were happy to move away from home to other people who hated it and didn't like living in halls and didn't get on with the people they lived with for that year.

i think now our video is going to be more about what advice current student would give to new students about living in halls so it will be a bit like a survival guide.
